I have a very old book, which was actually the textbook for the creative writing class I took back in college. Would you like to borrow it for a spell? See if it might trigger something?

Name a time (other than today 'cause I have had a massive sinus attack, joy) and I'll bring it over.

PostSubject: Story Seed: A Spartan Dilemma   Just to get the juices flowing. I_icon_minitimeMon Jun 16, 2014 6:01 pm

Place: Greek Country-side
Time: After the Second Persian Invasion of Greece ends in 479 BC (ie the invasion covered in the 300 movies)
Protagonist: Spartan Mother of fallen soldier (or soldiers; not one of the 300 - just one of the thousands that fought for the Allied Greek cities) dealing with the loss of her son(s?), and not wanting her youngest son (now 6) to be taken away to be trained when he comes of age. Father is extremely proud of his fallen son, and does not understand his wife's reluctance. Only respite is to move to another city, like Corinth (where they have a distant cousin who is willing to take them in, at least until they can set up a new farm).

Why is this traditional Spartan mother going against the laws of her people? Is it simply the death of her son (or sons), or is it something else? Has she received a vision that a local religious type has translated to mean the end of her house? Did she dream up such an encounter and she's just crazy (as happens to grieving mothers from time to time)? Did she ACTUALLY get a visit from the gods and no one believes her? Possibilities are yours to explore. Make no assumptions from this on the reality of magic, the gods, or whatever. Write it however you wish.

If she wins the argument and her husband assents to the journey, does that doom them more? Does this factor into his rebuttal?

Can be as long or as short as you like it, but keep in mind the traditional mindset of the spartan people (historical, not the fantastic one of the movies). Could be done as a single conversation, or it could be done as a short story in three or four parts. I'll leave the details (and outcome) to you. The argument is one as old as war and national identities, so there is plenty of source to pull from.

PostSubject: Sparta 478 BC   Just to get the juices flowing. I_icon_minitimeMon Jun 16, 2014 11:57 pm

Sparta Greece, 478 BC

Timo stood in her doorway watching Agapetos play in the street. Her face was unlined by the turmoil that raged within her. Her husband survived his Battles even having served at Platea. He came home with the honors and glories of battle. And the nightmares and the news of lost sons.

It didn’t seem like all that long ago that Serafiem had married her. The memory of their first days were still vivid in her mind. Eighteen years old, her head shaven, hidden, bound and dressed in his clothes as was tradition, waiting for him. She was not eighteen now. At thirty-three Timo had already buried three of her seven children. One boy had been born dead. another had died shortly after birth. Her sweet Aspasia, her lovely baby girl had been barely more than a baby when she died of the fever. At forty-four, she had buried all her sons but Agapetos and her eldest daughter had just died in childbirth earlier that year. Now of the Seven lives she had given to Sparta only two remained. Agapetos and Eunike.

Timo was torn as she watched her daughter race with her friends. Here in Sparta as a Spartiates, Eunike was assured rights and freedoms she would never find elsewhere. She would be strong, proud, honored and even revered. Timo had been much like Eunike. Her Father and brothers had served Sparta. Her mother had mourned the passing of her lovers as they didn’t return home, leaving the child she had borne as the only proof he had ever been there at all. And then as she grew older she began mourning sons that didn’t return home. Timo had done the same. Time would tell if it would also be Eunike’s fate. The fate of all spartan women, the worshipers of Eros.

“I love my home, Serafiem.”

“Then why do you wish to deny what makes it what it is?” he replied as he caressed her arm. “Why do you wish to withhold from him the things his brothers had?”

“You mean the ones I buried childless as I comforted their widows? I do not wish to deny him the strength found in the syssitia. I merely seek to withhold a death that in the end has no meaning. You cannot eat honor and glory tastes of ashes when one you love is suffering,” Timo replied quietly.

“What do you know of battle?” Serafiem didn’t quite manage to mask the bitterness in his voice as he turned away from her.

“I know the wounds that do not show; the kind that wake you screaming in the middle of the night and reduce a strong man to tears.”

“Careful, wench. You’ll go too far.”

“You act as if i haven’t felt the horror and the fear. The thought that dawn of the next day will find me on the banks of the Styx is not exactly foreign to me either. Unlike you I have had to face my battles alone. No brother to stand at my side and battle with me. I carry my scars just like you,” Timo cried as her voice broke. “My battles were just as dangerous, my scars as glorious.”

“I know,” He whispered, sighing.

“Please,” She began as her voice wavered, “let us go elsewhere. Have we not given Sparta enough? Are not five children enough? May I not keep what is left?”

“Timo...”

“Please, Serafiem” She begged turning from the scene before her for the first time. “Sotiris will take us in until we can get settled. He says Corinth is a wonderful place.”

Serafiem looked at his wife sadly. Yes, she had suffered much in this last war with the Persians. She had survived the loss of all but their youngest son and daughter. And yet, she was still strong and beautiful. she was as her name meant, An honor. And he was honored to be her husband. She brought him honor for simply being herself. She could debate politics, philosophy, art and music with anyone. She was a match for anyone.

But this was an old argument. One he could not lose. He could not bring her or his dead sons such dishonor as to leave.

“I am afraid,” she admitted. “I am afraid of the battle to come”

“It is no shame to fear the battle. All fear battle, they who claim they do not are either liars or monsters Agapetos will start at the agoge next year as the law requires.”

Timo’s face crumpled as she heard the iron in his voice. Serafiem reached out and laid a hand against her swollen belly. Oh yes, this was an old argument. They had it every time. He cradled her head against his shoulder as she wept and refused to give in the fear he felt for her.

Your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is a song fic.  The song is above, Tammy Wynette's "Stand By Your Man".  The time is 1985; the place is a honky tonk bar, and the main character is Veronica Durham (obviously before she married Arthur Burke).  The story should end with Ronnie in a hospital, meeting a young couple named Burke who have just had a baby boy named Arthur.

Despite the very public bickering between the US and another nation (Iran/North Korea/Syria in the present, USSR in the 60's, Nazi Germany in the 40's) there's some small, very compartmentalized branch of the government that is working with the other nation's counterpart agency. There's some situation that both nations are desperate enough to resolve that they would work with the enemy, but can't make it public. Whatever it is, the population of the world isn't ready to learn about what's being hidden.

Excellent. Does it involve the death of a clone of Justin Bieber or the actual Justin Bieber?

Yeah, that kid's been getting on my nerves being on SYTYCD.

Just as a total non sequitur, but I'm reading Monster Hunter Nemesis, which stars Agent Franks, and it is just so very badass.
