Bottom line: if you're not watching Vikings, you should be. Don't expect a strict adherence to history (it is, after all, only The History Channel) but they probably get more details right than wrong. Plus, you get cool characters like Floki and Lagertha.

First of all, Tom, kudos on the thread title. It made me LOL hard.

Secondly, Tom is absolutely right. The show was created and is executive produced by the fella who did The Tudors for Showtime (I think it was Showtime).

Number C, Lagertha is pure awesome, setting aside the entire hot chick thing she's got going. She's a mother and a warrior, and she's willing to let her husband know when he's wrong, generally by whacking him up side the head with her shield. While at home with the kids while the husband is off a-Viking (it's an occupation, not a nation), two mouth breathers show up at the house. Lagertha informs them that if they're hungry, she'll feed them. If they're thirsty, she'll give them some drink, but that's all they're getting. They inform her that they'll take what they want starting with her and that they don't want to kill her if they don't have to. Lagertha responds, "You could not kill me if you tried for a hundred years," and she then proceeds to beat the living shit out of them with a red hot poker from the fire pit. In a recent episode after a miscarriage she is praying to Frey (or possibly Odin, but I'm pretty sure it's Frey) to give her sons again. "Blind me or strike me deaf, but give me sons, I beg of you."

In short, I'm in love with Lagertha.

Tom, care to share about Floki?

Floki: genius ship builder. Loki worshiper. Loose cannon. Somewhat surprisingly, very devout for the whole pantheon.

And the aforementioned Lagertha: extremely hot, very smart, and with a pretty respectable body count so far:

Tonight is the first season finale! 10pm on History Channel. Or tomorrow on HULU.

Wouldn't you think that Jarl Borg would realize that resisting the King is feudal?

Sigh. Rolling Eyes No Suspect

I'm just wondering if the show's writers attended the George R.R. Martin School of Storytelling and Screenwriting.

Quote :
"Hey, who can we kill this week?"

"Well, the Network says it can't be Ragnar or Lagertha, but pretty much everybody else is fair game."

"Even Athelstan?"

"No, I think we can frak with the audience more if we just threaten to kill Athelstan every other episode, but then kill off somebody close to him, one of the beloved secondary characters."

"Genius!"

"That's what I learned at the George R. R. Martin School of Storytelling and Screenwriting."

And speaking of Athelstan, he's starting to look like a right proper Viking now.

Oh, and, boy, is Ragnar gonna get it when Lagertha finds out about The Other Woman. Yikes. If I remember the stories, Ragnar eventually divorced Lagertha so that he could marry a princess, and Lagertha didn't take that at all well...

Yep. And I'm betting the kid is going to be named Ivarr.

Quoth the raven to Ragnar Jr.. "Oh, my bad - I was looking for the GoT set..." (They're both filmed in Ireland, among other places.)

I've got good news, bad news, and more good news.

Good news: History Channel has already renewed Vikings for a second season. Huzzah!

Bad news: The people who produce those Ancient Astronaut shows will be taking over production.

Good news: I'm lying about the bad news. Huzzah!

Ya know what burns my biscuits with that whole "ancient astronaut" rigamarole? It's the fact that these morons just can't, cannot, believe that we Humans are capable of doing or discovering anything on our own. We had to have aliens point us in the right direction. They're making our entire species out to be lame losers who need outside help, that we can't do a damn thing for ourselves. They are, in their own insane way, perpetuating the culture of victimhood that the Left is so very fond of. They're not hip. They're just a lame reflection of the "mainstream." I got one word for these people: idjits.

I've thought much the same thing watching that show. As someone once pointed out, it isn't that our ancestors weren't as intelligent, it's that they weren't as knowledgeable. Big difference.

As much as I enjoy the show (in the same sense that I enjoy watching trainwrecks) I'd have exponentially more respect for them if they even once would offer some differing opinion to Tsoukalos and his fellow koolaid drinkers.

They're filming season 2 right now. Kathryn Winnick (Laegertha) tweets pics from the set. She has a horse. She named it "Sparkles." Tough woman names her warhorse "Sparkles".

The History Channel gave me an early birthday present last night: the Season 2 premiere of VIKINGS!

War! One might even call it a 'civil war'.

Courtroom Intrigue! (For values of a big rock counting as a court room...)

Domestic Drama! Where's Dark Ages Jerry Springer when you need him?

More George R.R. Martin-inspired deaths and near-deaths! Who lives? Who dies? I won't tell you! (Yes, I know it's out of character for me, but...)

Now, I'm squealing like a fangirl waiting for next week's second episode, which, I'm given to understand, involves a four year leap forward in time. Baby Bjorn is to be replaced by the Tribute from District 1.

Tom & I will likely be discussing this show via email, but I'm gonna put this out there in case there's anybody else watching this show.

Vikings is awesome.

I find myself in complete agreement.

Princess Nympho looked like she was about to jump Ragnar right there in front of God and everybody after the battle.

And her uncle deserved to die if he's the one that came up with that battle plan. I can see wanting to protect both banks, but really, pick the more valuable side and put the vast majority of your troops there. Leave skirmishers on the other side who can harass, disappear, rinse and repeat.

And are there ANY trustworthy Scandinavians outside Kattegat? Every viking they deal with turns out to be traitorous it seems.

Oh. My. God.

"Hey, let's split our huge army in half, and take control of both banks of the river. Then, when the stupid Norsemen arrive, they'll split their force in half to engage both of our larger forces..."

"But, what if they don't split up?"

"Stupid! I'm a tactical genius! They'll do exactly as I've predicted!"

"Okay, but what if they don't? What if they attack one or the other of us en mass? Shouldn't we do this where there's, you know, a bridge or a narrow spot in the river?"

"No! When they split up, and they will, we don't want them to easily be able to reinforce one another, like you're suggesting we do. Now, shut up 'cause here they come, and... Oh, bugger. You were right. Dang."

The nephew seemed genuinely surprised when the Vikings didn't split up as appeared to be the battle plan. That leads me to think that perhaps he was the planner of the "strategy" that Uncle King agreed to, which got Uncle King killed, and got Floki a neat new hat to play with. Of course, the nephew wasn't too bright 'cause unlike his men, he didn't run away when grinning Ragnar come sailing across the river with the heads of the other half of the army decorating the prows of his boats.

Yeah, as for Kalf, as soon as he told Lagertha that it wasn't right for him to propose to her, even though she was practically ripping him out of his clothes with her eyes, I knew he was either up to no good or gay. Like "helloooo, Viking thailor!" gay. Like "I know we're in the Dark Ages, but does that mean we have to keep it so dark in here all the time!" gay. Alas, though, he's not gay. He's just the Dark Ages equivalent of a metrosexual douche bag. BTW, "Einar" is no relation to Matt's dad. Just so you know.

Although, in my mind, Matt and Einar are descendants of Ragnar Lothbrok. Just 'cause that'd be kewl.

Holy Odin! S3, Ep 2 The Wanderer.

So much to say!

Princess Kenrith doesn't have issues. She has subscriptions. And she needs a prescription. You have to be pretty bat shit crazy to make Floki look normal in comparison.

Torstein! Aw, man!

Bjorn didn't seem happy Porunn said "yes".

What is Ecbert up to? Not that I blame him. In fact, I kinda wish I was him right now.

Hopefully that was vague enough to avoid spoilers for anybody who isn't me or Tom and hasn't seen the episode yet.

That was probably the most surreal episode in the series. Lots of weird stuff going on. And Kevin Durand as the wanderer? Without checking, I can't remember him playing a good guy before, so I immediately don't trust him...

He's played several good guys. In fact, his first character that I remember him playing was Joshua the Dog Boy on the second season of Dark Angel. You may not have recognized him in that because he had the dog boy facial prosthetics covering up his face. In the Strain TV series he's one of the vampire slayers. Of course, being six and a half feet tall, he probably gets cast as bad guys quite a bit.

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0243806/?ref_=nv_sr_1

Also, re: the Wanderer, I think he might be Odin. Unless he's up to no good, then he's Loki.
